Week 1

Teaching Points:  Writers learn where and how to sit on the carpet during instruction. Writers talk about why writers write - for an audience and with a  purpose.

Teaching Point:

Writers learn that they are people who make books, too. Just like Eric Carle! (Or any mentor author you choose)

Teaching Point:

Writers learn that authors craft their writing by making purposeful choices about the words they include and pictures they draw.

Teaching Point:

Writers learn some basic rules of the writing workshop time - write where you can concentrate, respect othersÕ work, etc.

Teaching Point:

Writers learn that there are many kinds of things they can  make - Inquiry study - gather many different kinds of books for students to study.

Week 2

Teaching Point:

Writers learn that correct spelling is important for our readers. Go over strategies (visual memory, high frequency words, word length, using words we know, etc.)

Teaching Point:

Writers learn rules of the writing workshop - Always write with a pencil; you may talk to others about your writing; clean up when the bell rings; be ready to listen to the share.

Teaching Point:

Writers learn that authors are accountable for finishing books and what defines a finished book.

Teaching Point:

Writers begin to understand the purpose and structure of writing conferences and know what they are expected to bring to the table.

Teaching Point:

Writers learn to ask themselves, ÒIs this really what I meant to say?Ó and to see that adding in, taking out, or moving around are also interesting parts of making books.

Week 3

Teaching Point:

Writers learn that one job of the writer is to make sure the writing is as correct as possible - with capital letters and punctuation.

Teaching Point:

Writers finish pieces and prepare to publish by reading their books to their partners.

Teaching Point:

Writers finish pieces and prepare to publish by reading their books to their partners.

Writers learn what to do when they finish a piece - start a new piece, peer edit, add to words and pictures, final copy.

Week 4

Writers learn that authors get ideas from things that happen in their everyday lives.

 

Teaching Point:

Writers learn that authors get ideas from thinking of places that they never want to forget.

 

Teaching Point:

Writers learn that authors get ideas from specific experiences.

 

Teaching Point:

Writers learn that authors get ideas from things they love to do.

 

Teaching Point:

Writers learn that authors get ideas from people they donÕt want to forget.
